Cape Cod! In Mar Vista!

Today I shopped with Cory Cooperider, who was picking up ingredients for a beautiful vegetable soup.
She sautes garlic and onion in the stock pot, then adds veggie stock, about 8 cups, because she’s making enough for the week. To that she adds diced sweet potato, celery and carrots, and if she’s feeling like it, some green beans, too. Then, when the soup is nearly done, she throws big handfuls of chopped kale, chard, and collard greens (any combo will do) on top, seasons with Bragg’s, and adds a can of black beans.
It sounds great — and she says it works even in this warm weather we’re having! Yum!
By the way, Cory also let me know that the market is very generous with carrot tops and leftover greens, which she uses to feed the wild rabbits that live in her yard. As you may remember, we have some wild bunnies living in Mar Vista, and now I know where to get them some food!!

This morning I treated myself to a coffee and canelle at Hotcakes Bakes. Yummy!! And such a nice little, affordable treat. I had been feeling stressed out the last few days, and this was just what the doctor ordered.
I just love a red tile roof.

This week we have a treat! A Celebrity Chef at the market: Mary Sue Milliken of the Border Grill and Ciudad.
Mary Sue was shopping for ingredients for her Easter dinner Sunday. She was having lamb, and to go with it she chose Chinese Amaranth Spinach. Amaranth is a grain, not eaten widely in this country, but very healthy, full of vitamins.

She prepared the “spinach” by boiling the leaves in salted water for 3- 4 minutes and then cooling them before dressing them with good quality olive oil, salt, pepper and a little lemon juice. Then she tops the greens with creamy Bulgarian feta cheese (made from sheep’s milk) and sun-dried tomatoes, both from the farmer’s market. Looks amazing!

Here’s where you can find Mary Sue and her cooking when she isn’t being spotted at the Mar Vista Farmer’s Market: MarySueAndSusan.

Hello Mar Vista Mom Readers,
Mar Vista Mom is visiting a Mission with her fourth grader this weekend so she asked me, Elise, of Elise’s Ramblings, to
guest blog. My subject, Chelsea Magdaleno, is an amazing photographer, so she
wanted to take the pictures. Unfortunately that means she is not in them, but
they are lovely.
Chelsea is making a Burrata cheese appetizer today.(This is not Chelsea. It’s the cheese guy.)
(And this is the cheese.)
She will
be dicing the tomatoes, basil and garlic,
and putting them on a large platter
then drizzling “good” olive oil over them, and sprinkling it all with Kosher
salt and fresh cracked pepper. Then she puts the burrata cheese (this is a
mozzarella-type cheese but with more cream) in the center.
She serves it with a sliced baguette, crackers, or just by
itself.
I’ve actually been fortunate enough to have had her bring
this to my house for a party. It is fabulous, but it doesn’t last long so make
sure you get some before it’s gone, if you decide to make it.
Thanks for having me, it was fun!
Elise

Progress! The cool building on the corner of Venice and Grand View is getting a new tenant: Floyd’s Barbershop. Super hip! I feel some big-time change coming to the neighborhood! More hipsters, ya think? For sure more people with nice hair!!
