Friday Night the All-Girl Revue is back at the Fanatic Salon, 8pm $10. These gals deliver the goods.

Saturday North Venice Little League has added a final sign-up day by popular demand. 10am – 2pm at the field at the top of Grand View Hill. Check their website for details.

Saturday night more comedy goodness at the Fanatic Salon: TRANS4MERZ returns with Bucket o’ Snakes, 8pm $10.

Monday is Martin Luther King Day and I highly recommend seeing America I Am at the CA Science Center in ExpositionPark. It’s an incredibly moving and powerful exhibit, celebrating the nearly 500 years of African American contributions to America and the world. Truly not to be missed, and a perfect day to see it.

Also Monday, at the California African American Museum (practically next door to the Science Center), they’re continuing their tradition of having Cake for King after the Kingdom Day Parade, which begins at 9am. It is his birthday, after all.

Monday Morning At The Mar Vista Lanes

Yesterday I had the great pleasure of meeting the Coffee Breakers, a bowling team of amazing ladies who’ve been bowling together every Monday morning for probably the last 25 years — but who can keep track? It may be even longer. (L to R: Dot Frey, the newest member, Melinda Newman, Lila Smith, Shirley Ruess, Ruth Shiro, Lorraine Zieve, and Emily Greenberg.) By the way, there are league bowling teams going at it 7 days a week at the Mar Vista Lanes. And here I thought it was just a great place to eat and to have a kids’ birthday bowling party (which it is — both). Learn something new every day.

Another Big Weekend with lots of activities to tell you about. Plenty of holiday shopping opportunities and family fun to be had. So without further ado…

Thursday evening marks the opening of Mixed Moments II, a photo exhibit by Mar Vista’s own Stephen Boskin, at City Councilman Bill Rosendahl’s West LA office, 1645 Corinth Ave, 90025, from 6:30pm to 9:30pm. Admission is free.

Also opening Thursday and running through the weekend is the Green Screen Environmental Film Festival & Salon, at the Electric Lodge in Venice. Check their website for showtimes and prices.

Friday morning from 7:30am – 9am, Mar Vista Elementary school Green Dolphins will be holding an eWaste recycling drive as part of their Community Day. The drive will run again on Saturday from 11am – 2pm.

Friday Night at the Fanatic Salon is another All-Girl Revue. Show starts at 8pm, admission is $10.

On Saturday New School West is holding their Holiday Bazaar from 10am – 4pm, and Beethoven Elementary School runs their 6th Annual Holiday Boutique from 10am – 3pm.

Saturday the Electric Lodge will also host an outdoor Eco/Arts Street Festival from 10am – 6pm. Free community event, plus there will be crafts for sale as well.

Also Saturday, take a trip through Mar Vista history by taking one of Mark Crawford’s walking tours. This weekend’s tour will be around the famous Mar Vista Oval, but please check the website of the MV Historical Society to verify times and tour locations.

Sunday is not to be outdone: in addition to the Mar Vista Farmer’s Market (which happens every Sunday, as you well know), there’s another Holiday Gift Sale, this one in a private home: 3410 Granville Ave. from 11am – 4pm.

Mar Vista Farmer’s Market Wrap-Up 11/1/09

Today’s shopper is Carley Knobloch, of Mothercraft Coaching, a site that’s all about helping moms figure out who they are besides being moms. She’s awesome and so is her site! Plus she’s going to make a fantastic dish for us today: Butternut squash soup. She starts by halving the squash, removing the seeds, and filling the cavities with salt, pepper, a little balsamic vinegar and sage, then she roasts it in a 350-degree oven for about an hour, cut side down. She also roasts a head of garlic at the same time, placing it in foil and adding a little olive oil on top. While they’re roasting, she rinses and chops 2 leeks, and peels and dices 2 apples. When the roasting is nearly complete, she sautes the leeks and apples in 1/2 and 1/2 butter and olive oil (about 2 tablespoons each) in a soup pot, just until translucent. She then scoops out the squash and squeezes out the garlic deliciousness and adds them both to the pot. As it starts to warm up, she adds vegetable stock (or you could use chicken stock) and some water — enough to cover the vegetables — and brings it to a simmer for about 15 minutes. Then she uses her handy immersion blender — or you could use a regular blender, just being careful to not overfill it — and you’re done! Carley garnishes it with either fried sage or homemade croutons, which she makes by cubing up some sourdough bread, tossing them with olive oil, salt and pepper, and roasting at 350 for about 10 minutes. Sounds delish!

Today in the Green Booth, Marcia Hanscom, co-Director of the Ballona Institute, (shown here with Green Committee co-Chair Sherri Akers) was on hand to let people know about the ongoing efforts to preserve the wetlands.

And today was the annual celebration of the Day of the Dead (Dia de Los Muertos), so there was a traditional altar on display, Dino Castro and his band performed, and my son’s 5th grade class from Grand View Blvd. Elementary School’s Dual Language program put on a play, all in Spanish. And yes, I helped my son (and husband) make the stage decorations. Aren’t they nice?

Friday and Saturday nights celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Ocean View Haunted House, courtesy of Insane House Of Pain. Free and open to the public 2 nights this year, from 7 -10pm. Scary!

Sunday at the Farmer’s Market is their annual Day of The Dead celebration, with music, theater and great food. See you there!

Saturday, October 3rd, Mar Vista park holds its annual Fall Festival, and this year’s theme is Green!

The festival runs from 10am to 4pm, and there will be bouncy houses, face painting, games, prizes, an art show, a Kidz Go Green Zone, booths with Eco solutions, products and info, and live entertainment all day long. Food and drinks will be sold, or you can bring your own picnic.

At the Fanatic Salon! It’s a night of Female Comedy for all of us Female MarVistans, and for those who like to hang out with us.

Show starts at 8pm, and we’ll meet there at 7:30 for a little sip of wine in the lobby — and perhaps a few delicious nibbles of Argentinian empanadas from Empanadas Place next door (yum)…? Just a snack, mom!

There’s parking on the street and in their lot, and the comedy costs $10 at the door — Cash Only. Hope to see you there!
