Hope to see you there! Should be a great day at the Mar Vista Farmer’s Market for the LA Costume Swap and Green Halloween! Sunday, October 9th, 9am – 2pm.
Even though it’s close to 80 degrees today, Fall is coming to the Mar Vista Farmer’s Market, with more root vegetables soon to be here!

Alex Weiser from Weiser Family Farms was here at his booth today and says they’ll soon have turnips, rutabagas, more kinds of carrots and potatoes, celeriac, romanesco cauliflower and watermelon radishes – just some of their Fall and Winter vegetables we can look forward to.
And just take a look at what’s new today:

Plus in the Green Booth, representatives from Label GMOs were on hand spreading the word about their upcoming rally on October 16th and pending legislation they’re trying to get passed that would give us all more information about what’s really in our food.
Today the big news at the Mar Vista Farmer’s Market was: Dates are back!
And organic pistachios are here – flavored and regular!
The Mar Vista Farmer’s Market was hopping today!
Cuyama Apples are back!
Smart Fish Co. has Stone Crab Claws!
Janae’s Fillets Alaskan Salmon made its debut.
Jonathan Schuler did a cooking demo making Tapas and selling his cookbooks.
Sustainable Works was back in the Green Booth today talking about their upcoming Free workshops, and G2 Gallery in nearby Venice was there promoting their new CSA drop-off program.
And LA Costume Swap was on hand to promote the upcoming Costume Swap Extravaganza on October 9th! Drop off any costumes you’d like to swap at the Green Booth ahead of time or bring them on the 9th for major swappage!
It was another gorgeous day at the Mar Vista Farmer’s Market!
James Brennan and John Ayers from Open Neighborhoods were on hand in the Green Booth talking about their current Community Solar project! DWP has reinstated the solar rebate program so now’s the time to go with the Sun’s Power!
As you may recall, I got my own solar panels through Open Neighborhood’s first Community Solar project 2 years ago and I am very pleased with mine. My panels are from Solar City and if you’d like more information, please let me know. Or feel free to click though on the Solar City button on the right side of the website.
It’s the height of the season at the Mar Vista Farmer’s Market and the vegetable & fruit stands are overflowing with amazing produce.
Today was the first day of the Ban on Plastic Bags at the market, and people seemed to be reacting pretty well. The Green Committee & The Market were giving away 800 of these strawberry reusable bags,
reDiscover Center had bags that kids could decorate,

and Emma Caday sells these handmade reusable produce bags.
Also, feel free to bring your extra reusable bags to donate for others to use.
Gina from Sustainable Works was on hand in the Green Booth to promote the Free workshop that’s starting up in October 5 at SMC Bundy Campus.
Plus the Mar Vista Arts & Crafts Guild was back after a Summer break.
It’s glorious Summer here in Mar Vista, and the Farmer’s Market flowers are just gorgeous today!
The Farmer’s Market and the MVCC Green Committee want to remind everyone that there will be no more plastic bags given out after September 1st! Please remember to bring your own bags as of next Sunday!
And I met some great kids working on a great project – Best Buddies provides “…opportunities for one-to-one relationships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.”
The kids I met participate in the Best Buddies Middle School and Best Buddies High School programs, and they are fund-raising to keep them going here in LA, so please consider making a donation to their cause by buying a tee shirt or bracelet. Thanks!
Today at the Mar Vista Farmer’s Market, the MVCC Green Committee presented Evo Farm, an aquaponics farming concept. In the space of a 2-car garage, Evo Farm hopes to provide all of a family’s vegetable needs.
And both the Market and the Green Committee wanted me to remind everyone in Mar Vista that the Ban on Plastic Bags at the Mar Vista Farmer’s Market goes into effect September 1st! Get ready, people!
I caught a glimpse of Mar Vista’s own City Councilperson, Bill Rosendahl, chatting with a constituent.
The summer veggies are in full gorgeousness.
And Strawberries are still delightful.
I recently met with representatives from the California Strawberry Commission, including A. G. Kawamura, who grows the little red gems down in Irvine. He and David Grotto, RD, LDN, author of 101 Optimal Life Foods, shared plenty of info with us about the health benefits of strawberries. Like, for example, did you know that strawberries contain vitamin C, folate, potassium and polyphenols? They do.
But they didn’t have to get all science-y on me; I love strawberries and will happily eat them served any way.
The Strawberry Commission graciously gave me a copy of their Strawberry Recipes for Everyday cookbook to try out – and another to giveaway to one lucky reader. So let the strawberry-eating and contest-entering begin!
If you would like a chance at winning the book, please leave a comment on this post on MarVistaMom.com by Friday, August 26th at 12 Noon PST, at which point a winner will be chosen at random. Winner must live within the US or be able to receive shipping within the US; No International Shipping.
UPDATE: The contest is over and the winner has been notified. Thanks!
It was a June Gloom Day in August here in Mar Vista, but that didn’t stop the crowds from coming out to get their veggies at the Mar Vista Farmer’s Market!
Today was a big apple day at the Market: Gravensteins were here for one day only! Did you read about Walker Farm in the LA Times last week?
Also, have you tried Skylake Ranch’s Pomegranate products? This is Chris Brown, Operations Manager, with a couple of the things they make. I tried the fruit spread he gave me and it’s very nice; not too sweet and with a little sour bite. Just my speed. They have syrup and salad dressing I’d like to try as well.
And the Green Booth did double duty today: One side had Sustainable Works, which will be running workshops in LA starting this fall (check out the MVCC Green Committee’s website for all the details)
- and the other side had Alivia Hunter and Lillian Gardner from LA Costume Swap, who were there to promote the Big Costume Swap Day on October 9th, 2011! Save the Date! The Farmer’s Market will be overrun with “Green” Halloween Costumes! Green-O-Ween!
