Side By Side on PBS 8/30

Keanu Reeves has produced the documentary Side By Side, a look at digital filmmaking that asks the question: is Film dead?

Reeves and his team of documentarians got amazing access to a long list of influential filmmakers, like directors David Lynch, David Fincher, Martin Scorsese, George Lucas, Steven Soderbergh, and Christopher Nolan, to some of the DPs who’ve literally shaped the look of film over the past 30 years, like Vittorio Storaro, Phil Meheux, Ellen Kuras, and Vilmos Zsigmond.

For any film buffs, it’s not to be missed, and for any digital filmmakers, it’s a fascinating look at the origin of the art – and at the state of the art, especially when looking at the newest cameras by RED.

Airing on PBS stations throughout the Labor Day weekend; check local listings.

I saw it. Thanks for the heads up. Interesting how the Luddite commentary that I’m used to seeing in the world of print and writing plays out in the world of, well, of cinema, since we can’t still call it the world of film.

Thanks for that comparison, Jane – never thought of it that way, but it’s really the same kinds of things being said, huh?

The thing I thought was crazy was Panavision trying to keep a camera size that would still make use of all their lenses, but that wasn’t going in the direction the rest of the digital cameras were – smaller! Big misstep.
