Mar Vista Farmer’s Market Wrap-Up 6-13-10
The market is all about the stone fruit these days. The season is ramping up and there are apricots, peaches, nectarines, plums and plucots.

In the Green Booth, MODAA was on hand reminding us of the sustainability issues involved in earthquake-proofing our homes.
They gave me their top tip for earthquake-proofing inside your home: make sure all your heavy furniture is secured to the walls, and add child-proof latches to the doors of all the cabinetry so that, in case all of the items inside get shaken around or broken, they won’t fall out on the ground. Be safe!
Mar Vista’s Got Fewer Medical Marijuana Dispensaries At The Moment
The LA City Prosecutors have, at least for now, successfully won the fight to close 439 Medical Marijuana dispensaries in the City of LA, and several of them were located in Mar Vista.
According to the list published in the LA Times, the 420 Collective, The Rainforest Collective, Centinela Green House Collective, CLINIC, Federal Medicinal Support, The Organic Pharmacy, and Venice Collective have all been ordered to shut down in our 90066 zip code. (I had no idea we had so many pot shops in the neighborhood, did you?)
Some have signs up explaining why they’re closed and at least one is waiting to see which way the legal winds blow.
And, to make it perfectly clear, again, my concern here is not about keeping marijuana out of the hands of those who use it for medicinal purposes, but rather the explosion of so many green cross shops in our neighborhood, and for that matter, all over LA.
By the way, can anyone explain to me why the symbol for a medical marijuana dispensary seems to be a Green Cross?
Mar Vista Meet-Up: Friday Cocktail Hour At Waterloo & City 6/11
Friday, June 11th at 5pm: It’s time for Happy Hour in the bar at Waterloo & City, one of Mar Vista’s hottest new restaurants.
I’ve eaten dinner there (and these terrific desserts) and it was really quite tasty, and so I’m really looking forward to happy hour treats at happy hour prices. Care to join me, Mar Vista readers? I look forward to seeing you there! Follow me on Twitter for a live account of the fun evening @SAuerswald.
Mar Vista’s Newest Restaurant Is Now Open: La Petite Creperie
Located on Grand View Blvd. in the space formerly occupied by Valle de Oaxaca, La Petite Creperie is a welcome addition to the neighborhood! It’s very cute inside with lots of French countryside touches.

Crepes and salads and the only menu items so far, and that’s plenty for now. There are savory crepes (actually called galettes in correct French, I just learned) and sweet ones as well. The decor is quite adorable and I am so glad Benoit followed his passion for cooking and opened the restaurant.
I tried the bacon, potato and cheese and the asparagus and prosciutto galettes, the baby arugula salad with prosciutto and burrata (my favorite item so far)
- and for dessert we had a citrus crepe.
The coffee was outstanding as well.
I highly recommend having a meal here.
La Petite Creperie, 3809 Grand View Blvd., Mar Vista 90066 (310) 437-0226 Open for breakfast and lunch Tuesdays through Sundays; Closed Mondays.

Mar Vista Farmer’s Market Wrap-Up 6-6-10
It was a gorgeous day at the market. The Arts and Crafts collective was there, the Real Princesses were there: Princess Buttercup, Princess Lily, Princess Rose, and Princess Bluebell (Did you know you can hire them for your daughter’s party?)
– and teachers and kids from New School West preschool were on hand in the Green Booth displaying their love of the earth — and demonstrating how to make recycled paper.
But the main attraction today was the Family Dance Jam. Check it out:

MVCC Candidate Forum Wrap-Up
The Mar Vista Community Council held a candidate forum Tuesday night, June 1st, and it was very well organized — much cleaner and smoother than Democracy usually is, so I commend the MVCC and all the people who put it together.
Brian Watt of KPCC was the moderator, and it turns out he’s a Mar Vista stakeholder as well, so that was cool to know. (I am a big fan of kpcc, so it was great to meet him — just wanted to share that.)
The 53rd Assembly District is a crowded race. It’s Ted Lieu’s seat in the State Assembly and he’s vacating it to run for Attorney General. Seven democratic candidates were on hand, as were as a republican and a green party candidate. I commend them all for giving it a shot and making a go of it.
You know from reading this and my other blog, I’m a liberal democrat with pretty lefty leanings, so although I was open to hear the views of Nathan Mintz (R), he doesn’t have my support. However, since he’s the only one running in his category, he’ll be on the November ballot should anyone else care to vote for him. Lisa Ann Green (green party — and Yes, that’s her real name) – she’ll also be on the November ballot since she’s running as the only Green in the race. I loved what she had to say and I love that we live in a country where she has a right to say it.
Now for the dems: I wish they could run as a team, since they all have varying degrees of skill and passion about the democratic process, but they can’t. And as you also know from reading MVM, I have already endorsed Kate Anderson, and the forum didn’t change my mind. Betsy Butler, Nick Karno, Edgar Saenz, James T. Lau, Peter Thottam, and Diane Wallace are running on similar (but not identical) parts of a basic democratic platform: education and job creation being high on the list. (Please note: Mitch Ward (d) is also running but was not able to attend the forum, nor was Ethan Musulin (libertarian).)
But Kate Anderson is getting my vote on June 8th because I think she has the ability to work with people on all sides of an issue. I have seen her in action, working on local education projects, and she has been able to handle some very tough customers — people who are a challenge for anyone to work with — and bring them all to the table harmoniously. I think that’s going to take her far in Sacramento.
In the 36th Congressional District, Marcy Winograd had it over her opponents without even saying a word, in my opinion. They’re all running for Jane Harman’s seat and so is she, so it’s a tough fight by any stretch. But Marcy’s the only other democrat — Pete Kesterson and Andrew Sharp are both republicans, as is Mattie Fein (who was not able to attend), and so neither of them represent values I look for in a candidate — and Herb Peters is a libertarian who seems to stand for things I really can’t support, like taking us back to the 1800′s to find economic prosperity. (I think.) So Marcy Winograd’s getting my vote on June 8th. No surprise.
No matter who you’re supporting, please get out and vote on June 8th. Democracy takes work, people. It’s important to be a part of it. And please note that is probably the only time you’ll see me give out so much space and so many links to republicans — ever.
Mar Vista Is The Land Of Opportunity
Mar Vista is all about opportunity right now. There are more For Rent, For Lease and For Sale signs — and empty storefronts around our neighborhood than I can remember seeing since we moved here in 1996.

Now is the time, people! Businesses: come and open up shop here. Renters: come enjoy our community. Home Shoppers: what are you waiting for?
