Mar Vista Farmer’s Market Wrap-Up 5-30-10

It’s a glorious Spring Day here in Mar Vista and it feels like summer. The fruit thinks so, too, because the peaches and nectarines smell amazing.  Even though there’s no rain in sight right now, it will come back eventually, so Alex Metcalf and Paula Henson of Rainbud were on hand to talk about their rain barrels today in the MVCC Green Booth. And Deborah Groening and Dalit Gev of the Well Baby Center were at the market today doing crafts with the kids.

MVCC Hosts Candidate Forum June 1st

The Primary election is coming up June 8th and the Mar Vista Community Council is giving you a chance to meet the candidates for 36th Congressional District and 53rd Assembly District on Tuesday, June 1st at 7pm at the Mar Vista Recreation Center.

The forum is slated to be hosted by Brian Watt of Southern California Public Radio and you can read about all the candidates who are set to appear on the MVCC website. I’m planning to attend and will give my opinions next week.

Happy Birthday Floyd’s Barbershop Mar Vista!

This Saturday, May 29th, Floyd’s Barbershop will have been here 1 whole year. Can you believe it? And to celebrate, they are holding a drawing for a year’s worth of free haircuts! How awesome is that??!!! Just stop in for a trim or highlights or a shave on Saturday, May 29th and you can enter the drawing. The shop has all the details and contest rules, so check with them for all that good stuff. They’re open from 9am -8pm.

And your hair can go to good cause while you’re getting all spiffed up: Floyd’s Mar Vista is donating all the hair trimmings free of product to efforts to help clean up the oil spill. It’s a win-win, baby.

Mar Vista Farmer’s Market Wrap-Up 5-23-10

Today my shopper is Roger Nygard, director of the new documentary The Nature Of Existence, and an old friend. Roger is going to bake some beets, and saute the beet greens, and he’s going to bake some wild-caught sand dabs from the Smart Fish company. He’ll dip them in a mixture of egg whites, rice milk and a little bit of honey, then coat them with brown rice “bread crumbs” and bake on a minimal layer of olive oil. Sounds delish!

In the MVCC Green Booth today, the Master Gardeners were on hand, as they are every month, giving out seedlings and seeds and gardening information, all for free.

Mar Vista’s Pioneer Woman: Sherri Akers

Sherri Akers is the co-chair of the Mar Vista Community Council’s Green Committee, and in that capacity, she has worked on projects such as the Mar Vista Green Garden Showcase 2 years in a row, as well as the Wise Water Use Expo, and the upcoming Wise Power Use Expo in September. On top of that, almost every Sunday you can find her in the Green Committee booth at the Mar Vista Farmer’s Market. (By the way, if you’d like to know what else the Green Committee is up to and become a part of it, please join them for their monthly meeting this Sunday, 5/23 at 9am at the Mar Vista Farmer’s Market.)

Sherri is a tireless volunteer with a passion for Greening our world. And on Friday she was honored by City Councilman Bill Rosendahl as a Pioneer Woman of Los Angeles. The ceremony, held in a packed City Council Chamber at Los Angeles City Hall, was a chance for each Councilmember to recognize a woman from his or her district — a chance to honor women who’ve made amazing contributions to their communities, and that description fits Sherri to a T. The awards are the brainchild of Councilwoman Janice Hahn (who by the way has perfect hair). When Councilman Rosendahl chose Sherri Akers, he highlighted all her accomplishments and efforts, and he bestowed upon her the traditional bouquet of flowers, certificate signed with a flourish, and — and this is a biggie — 5 eggs from his very own chickens and one from his turkey. (Have you ever eaten a turkey egg? I haven’t. Many in the chamber were jealous, as well they should be. I understand Mayor Villaraigosa is a fan of Bill’s eggs, and that Councilman Rosendahl gives them out only sparingly.) So enjoy the eggs, Sherri! And thanks for all you do for Mar Vista!

Just as an aside, Councilman Eric Garcetti chose to honor The LA Derby Dolls from his district.
