Countdown To Permit Applications For LAUSD Parents 4/1

Just about 12 hours from now (at midnight, April 1st) the LAUSD web page that will accept Inter-District permit applications will go live. And my prediction is the site will crash by about 12:15am. I figure it’ll take about that long to fill out the application and click “submit” — and when about 1000 people do it at the same moment, the system will be understandably overwhelmed. I don’t have a crystal ball, mind you, just making an educated guess about it all.

And believe me, the irony of the date is not lost on most of us.

For those of you scratching your head right about now, a little background: LAUSD recently issued a new policy limiting transfers out of the district in order to keep the estimated 12,000 students who left it this past year. It’s a money-saving measure since they can re-coup about $50 million dollars by doing it, it’s estimated. And I mentioned it in a post over on Sarah’s Blog the other day.

But a lot of people got pretty upset about it. The parents whose kids would be affected started a Facebook group to share information and have mobilized and organized VERY quickly. The school districts that would be affected by losing so many students (and dollars) have collaborated in order to save their own budgets. And now the LA County Supervisors have weighed in, questioning whether the policy works since, in the words of Zev Yaroslavsky, it’s a “zero-sum game.”

On April 6th, the LAUSD School Board will meet and consider a motion to modify the policy, so things could change slightly at that point, but most people will still submit applications tonight at midnight just in case.

I sure hope they’re servers are ready. And why do I think they won’t be…?

Mar Vista Farmer’s Market Wrap-Up 3-28-10

Today I am my own shopper. ;-)  I’m going to make lamb chops from Cali Farms on the grill, roasted potatoes from Maggie’s Farm and asparagus for dinner tonight. Plus I got some limes (yes, these are indeed limes) and mint because it feels so much like summer I’m going to start Mojito season early. And then I got some tomatoes and strawberries because they’re just so delicious right now.Today in the Green Booth it was the monthly visit from the Master Gardeners, and they brought the usual assortment of seeds and seedlings they give away free, in this case to my very own kids. One got a celery plant and one got a milkweed to attract Monarch butterflies. So cool! And don’t forget: the 2nd Annual Green Garden Showcase takes place on April 25th, brought to you by the Mar Vista Community Council Green Committee.

Also, in the Mar Vista Community Booth, today was the first of 2 “Meet The Candidates” events. I met several of the candidates for Community Council directors, and plan to meet the rest next weekend. Plus there’s a formal Candidate Forum on April 6th at 7pm at Mar Vista Park. I urge you to connect with the process as we approach the April 11th election for a new set of Directors. If you can’t make it for next weekend’s event, feel free to visit the Mar Vista Community Council’s website to read info about all the candidates.

Mar Vista Farmer’s Market Wrap-Up 3-21-10

Today I have a special shopper: my brother David and his family are visiting from DC. He’s the Associate Dean of Academic Programs at the National War College. He’s going to make roasted potatoeswith rosemary (from my garden), olive oil, salt & pepper to go with the grass-fed beef from Cali Farms we’re going to grill for dinner. Plus our two families had brunch at the market today and sampled food from several vendors: chocolate croissants from Delice, tacos from Larry’s (before and after), a Belgian waffle and a 3-berry muffin from Laurent, corned beef sandwich and mini St.Patrick’s Day cupcakes from Earl’s Gourmet Grub, kettle korn, pizza from the fire roasted pizza place, and the lime and cactus Oaxaquan ice cream.

JR Organics also had a lovely display of Spring calla lilies. And at the Green Booth today, Meline and Rosie Abramyan of Modaa were on hand to show various materials used for home insulation.

Tanya Anton’s Go Mama Guide Is The Bomb

(I hear that’s what the kids are saying these days.) What this mom is saying is that Tanya Anton really knows her stuff: She can tell you all about public schools on the Westside. I took her seminar this weekend and I must tell you — it is thorough. I mean, I have learned a lot in my 6 years in country in LAUSD, and I have often had people run from the room screaming when I start to explain things to them.

But Tanya Anton has a way of explaining it all and keeping people in the room. It’s a gift, clearly.

I went to the seminar because, like many of you readers, I am looking for a middle school for my eldest. And like many of you readers, I am concerned about LAUSD’s new policy regarding inter-district transfers. Tanya has as much or more information about the state of that policy than anyone around.

She’s not there to rank schools or tell you where to send your kids; she gives you the info to navigate the very, very confusing world of Westside public schools, including the magnet system and the charter schools.

She’s written a book about choosing an elementary school and has recently come out with a guide to middle school choices as well. I bought the middle school book, which was discounted at the seminar to $15, normally $19.95. (I paid $25 to attend the seminar.) For the information it contains and the straightforward way it’s presented, I think it’s a bargain. I highly recommend it. Her website, GoMamaGuide.com, is a great resource for information about local schools. Give it a look-see.

Mar Vista Farmer’s Market Wrap-Up 3-14-10

Today at the market, there’s a new booth: Joelle Olive Oil from Santa Barbara, with olive oil blends, soaps and salt scrubs as well.

And while today’s not their first day, there is a new berry stand in town.Today in the Green Booth: Landscape Designer Deni Friese, one of the Master Gardeners, was on hand to show how easy it is to install a drip irrigation system.

And the Venice High School Learning Garden was represented by some Venice High students and some lovely seedlings.

2010 Mar Vista Green Garden Showcase is on April 25

Green Garden fans, the 2010 Mar Vista Green Garden Showcase is coming up April 25th! The FREE, self-guided tour of green gardens in our neighborhood is now in its 2nd year, and let me tell you, there are some spectacular gardens to see! I highly recommend it, not only because my garden is on the tour  *ahem* but also because it’s such a great way to spend an afternoon.

Oh and by the way? March 15th is very last, drop-dead, no-more-chances-at-all, NO MATTER WHO YOU ARE deadline to get your garden included in this year’s tour. That means, if you want your garden to be part of the tour, you must submit your information to the MVCC Green Committee by Monday, March 15th — no exceptions!

I know there are some of you out there who are still on the fence about being on the tour — well, this is it, people: decision time! And I say, Go For It! It’s very fun and it’s for a good cause: it’s all about promoting green gardening practices.

So check out the MVCC Green Committee’s website which has information about this year’s tour and how to be included.
