PitFire Pizza Restaurant Review

PitFire Pizza is freshly opened in Mar Vista and I’m thrilled! I love the space and it just feels great being there. But it’s really all about the food, right? Well, I love that, too. It’s real food, not a plasticy chain delivering plasticy chain food. pitfire pizzas and pastaI’ve tried several of the pizzas: a plain cheese for the kids, the Big Sur, which has shrimp on top, and my favorite so far, the burrata pie, which has arugula on top. burrata pieI’ve also tried a few pastas: spaghetti and meatballs, North Beach clam and bacon spaghetti, and a special papardelle with short ribs — which was really good. papardelle with short ribsI ate there with friends the other night; Jenny (of MoveYouForward.com) had a special goat cheese, red pepper, sausage and mushroom pizza goat cheese, red pepper, mushroom & sausage pizzaand Julia (of SafetyGraphicFun.com) had the chopped salad (sans meat) and the flatbread with ricotta as an appetizer.chopped saladflatbread with ricottaAll really tasty.

I got to meet the owner, Paul Hibler. Paul Hibler and Sarah AuerswaldHe’s a great guy and he makes great food. My goal is to eat my way through the entire menu by the end of Spring. Wish me luck!

Reminder: Wednesday 2/10 Is MVCC Candidate Filing Deadline

The deadline for filing the completed candidate filing form is fast approaching! Download the form here if you are interested, and quickly fill it out and send it back in.

Why, you may ask, would anyone be interested? The MVCC (and a few dozen tireless volunteers) has been a catalyst for turning Mar Vista from “that part of town you drive through on the way to Venice” into the green, farmer’s market oasis you now see before you. Green Garden Showcase? Sustainable Works? Education forum? Mar Vista’s 80th Birthday festival? Countless beautification grants and school grants? All that and more is courtesy of the MVCC.

Mar Vista Farmer’s Market Wrap-Up 2-7-10

Today’s shopper is Lauren Johanson, co-founder of YourDailyThread.com. Lauren Johanson, co-founder of YourDailyThread.com(She and co-founder Tracy Hepler were also the guests at the Green Booth today.)

Lauren is going to make Tuscan Winter Tomato Soup. She starts by blanching the tomatoes, peeling them, and then coarsely chopping them. roma tomatoesThen she sautes chopped garlic (onions are optional) onions and garlicin a generous amount of olive oil. Add the tomatoes, salt and pepper, and cook down a little.  To serve, Lauren takes toasted bread and breaks it up on top of the soup (think large croutons), plus shredded basil, and if you like, some grated parmesan or red pepper flakes. Sounds delish!

New at the market this week: Cali Farms Gourmet Meats with grass-fed beef, lamb and goat. Cali Farms Gourmet MeatsThis is Timothy Martin and Ibrahim Mesallem, who’ll be here selling in Mar Vista. The farm is outside of Stockton, CA, and I am very excited to have them here in our market. I bought some lamb chops and grilled them very simply, based on something I saw Mario Batali do on TV, and they were fantastic. I highly recommend them.
