Mar Vista Farmer’s Market Wrap-Up: 12/13/09

Today’s shopper is Dr. Gretchen Kubacky, of DrKubacky.com. She’s a Health Psychologist who practices an integrative approach to mental and physical well-being. Dr. Gretchen KubackyToday she came to the market to get the ingredients for her German Apple Tart. She starts with a basic shortbread-like tart dough, consisting of flour, sugar, a pinch of salt and softened butter. Cut the butter into the dough until crumbs form and then make it form a ball.  Take the dough and press it into a fluted tart pan. Then, peel, core and slice between 4 – 6 organic granny smith apples into 1/4″ thin slices.organic granny smithsArrange the slices so they make pretty concentric circles on top of the dough, then dot the top with more butter, cinnamon and sugar. Pop it in the oven at 350 degrees for between 30 – 40 minutes until golden brown. Yummy!

Today in the Green Booth, David King, of the Venice Learning Garden, one of the largest school gardens in the country, was on hand to talk about the mission of the garden. Here he is with some of the student and community volunteers who take time to help garden. The Learning Garden VolunteersBudget cuts are threatening the garden and any help you can give will be welcomed. Please contact them through their website: TheLearningGarden.org.

Santa Visited Mar Vista This Week

It’s true! Santa came to town! He and his sleigh, Santa and SUVpulled by a very accommodating LAPD Pacific Division SUV, and with a police escort to boot, stopped several places all over town this week. Santa stop at Grand ViewSanta Stop in neighborhoodIt’s a show of community spirit on the LAPD’s part, and it’s a heart-warming event for the kids — and kids-at-heart. There are even elves. ElfThis year’s most requested items, according to Santa? Computers and video game consoles. I guess we have a very high-tech group of kids here in Mar Vista.

Thanks, Pacific Division! Santa leavingBye, Santa! See you next year.

Mar Vista’s So Hot, We’re On The Huffington Post!

We have another local booster: Stacie Krajchir, of the Bungalow PR — and a Mar Vista resident — loves our neighborhood so much she saw fit to write about us on the HuffPo (as it’s called by those of us who love it). Screen shot 2009-12-11 at 12.36.36 PMIt’s a very nice shout-out for all of Mar Vista, and for yours truly and this blog I love to write as well. (I didn’t know Stacie was going to mention me, but I’m thrilled and flattered that she did.) Check out her post here and give it some comment love if you have a moment.

Have a great weekend, Mar Vista!

The Curious Palate Goes All Out For Parents

You know I love the Palate. I do. I love the egg salad sandwich, the Blue Paradise sandwich and the salad version as well. And now I love the breakfast sandwich, too.

But here’s what I currently love the most about the Curious Palate: milk warm-upThey will give you a warm bowl of water to heat up milk (or formula or breastmilk) for your baby. How awesome is that? Even though I don’t need the service anymore, I still think this is the coolest thing a restaurant could do for a parent of a very young child. And I sure wish they’d been around when I did have little ones!

Plus the other great service they have for busy parents — and this one applies to all busy people — Curbside Pickup. Order online or by phone and they’ll bring it out to your car. No waking the sleeping baby in the car seat, no worrying about finding a parking spot. Talk about Full Service.

Mar Vista’s Latest Solar Home: Mine!

Phase Two of my home’s solar conversion is complete! There are enough black glass panels on my roof now to qualify it as an electrical generator. You can read about phase one here. Here’s my roof before:  Here’s what it looked like yesterday:

solar roof in processand here it is today — all done: AWESOMENESSSSS.

And check out the a-DOR-able crew who did all the work: It was supposed to take 3 days and they actually finished in 2 days! Swift and efficient. Such sweet sorrow to see them go…

Now all that’s left is to be hooked up to the grid. It may take a while, but I promise to post as soon as DWP says we’re good to go.

And I know I mentioned this before, but the best part may be the fact that, because we’re doing the lease option, um, we haven’t had to write a single check; it’s all in the lease. So, for the next 20 years, we’ll pay exactly the same electric bill we do now.

Want more info on this for your house? Check out GoSolar Mar Vista on OpenMarVista.net or SolarCity.com. And I didn’t get any better deal for writing this than anybody else would. See for yourself.
