Save The Date: Mar Vista Ladies’ Night Out Friday, August 28th

Our first official night out with the Ladies will be Friday, August 28th, at the Wood, from 6:00pm – 10:00pm.

We’ll be ordering food from the Wood’s menu, but bringing our own vino, if you’re in the mood. They serve a range of non-alcoholic choices, so no worries there. Come on out and meet up with others of us in the neighborhood. Moms and Ladies alike are welcome! Childbearing is not a requirement. But it is a night for the women. I hope to see you there!

Mar Vista Farmer’s Market Wrap-Up

Today’s market shopper is Elise Derby, my neighbor and the blogger responsible for everything you’ll find at Elise’s Ramblings. Elise at marketShe’s going to make Chicken Kebabs with veggies, making use of these incredibly beautiful peppers, peppersonions, onionseggplant eggplantand mushrooms.mushrooms

She marinates the chicken in a little soy sauce and beer, chops it into kebab-size pieces, skewers them along with the chopped veggies, and throws them on the grill. Super easy — just add rice or a salad for a perfect summer dinner.

What’s New At The Market Today:

Anatomy Of A Block Party

Our block has held a block party for 5 years in a row, and it is an Amazing Amount of Fun. It’s also an amazing amount of work to set it all up.

But it’s absolutely SO much fun, I thought I would let the community know the ins and outs of getting a block party off the ground, because it is tricky to figure out where to go and what to do.

I turn to my neighbor and blogger, Elise Derby, for expertise in this matter, since she’s been in charge of our block party every year. I like to think it’s a labor of love, but I know for sure it’s a of of labor. There are lots of us who try to help out, and on the day of the party, everyone always chips in, but all the prep work is handled, oh so capably, by Elise.

(I’m buttering her up because I never want her to stop being in charge. Keep the love flowing to Elise!)

*** UPDATE: My vacation has thrown my blog all out of whack! Let’s get it right this time! ***

Elise says every year has been slightly different, but there are some basic steps that have to be taken each time. First of all, between 3 and 4 months before you want to have your block party, the neighbors need to get together and decide what kind of party they want to have and how much money they want to spend on it. We started out with an all-pot-luck version to keep costs low. Everyone brought out their own tables and EZ-up tents. Now we rent those things and have them delivered. Plus we get a bouncy house and sometimes a dunk tank. But the rest is still pot-luck sharing.

In terms of official steps to be taken, it goes like this: Fill out the paperwork online here at the Bureau of Street Services website and download the petition form, which must be signed by 51% of the neighbors on the affected street. You then have to get insurance for the event, the price for which has gone up from approximately $100 5 years ago to approx. $250 now.

Once the petition is signed, insurance is purchased, and a Hold Harmless form is filled out, the entire packet gets sent to Street Services. Then there are City permit fees of approx. $300, which have been waived in the past by our great City Council members, but since LA is in a bit of a budget crisis, the fees may not be waived any more. (Check with your Councilperson’s office to be sure.) Then, finally, there are Temporary No Parking Signs that get posted a few days before the event, so people will know not to park in the middle of the party, and barricades that block off the street on the actual day.

Yes, it is a ton of work, but it is so worth it. I love our neighborhood and having the chance to hang out with my neighbors on a beautiful summer day is one of the best things about living here. I highly recommend it for your neighborhood as well!

Mar Vista Business Profile: Bikerowave Community Bicycle Shop

store frontFreshly opened on August 3rd, Bikerowave is an all-volunteer-run, member-owned, co-operative community bike shop, dedicated to empowering the cycling public by providing affordable hands-on education about bicycle repair and maintenance. Which means, they want you to learn how to repair and maintain your own bikes. Plus they’re all about creating and maintaining a community around bikes, so they do things like hosting parties and movie nights.

That’s why Mar Vista is such a good fit for their store: it’s right on the bike path, across the street from LA Brakeless, and a block down from the Farmer’s Market. Not to mention Mar Vista’s growing Green tendencies. Human-powered transportation just makes so much sense.

(MVM just got a bike again after a long period without — it’s so much fun riding with the kids! But I don’t know anything about maintenance or repair, so thank goodness Bikerowave is here!)

The shop was packed Monday evening, as they opened for their first day in Mar Vista. Eric and AlexHere are co-founders Eric Colton and Alex Thompson in front of a flurry of activity there last night. Oh, and they have a disco ball on the ceiling. Just had to mention that.disco ball

Welcome to the neighborhood, Bikerowave!

Mar Vista Farmer’s Market Wrap-Up

Today was the market’s 3rd birthday — and there was plenty of celebrating going on. Bands playing, free ice cream, new booths on display, new waste management systems, and special guests! Happy Birthday, Mar Vista Farmer’s Market!! Mar Vista loves you!Michelle Cali and Sara Breuer of allrecipes

The special guests were the good people representing allrecipes.com, a recipe site that’s interactive and user-driven, which is very cool. I’m new to the site, but I’m already a convert. The site offers an ingredient search tool that lets you find recipes using the thing you have in your pantry, or in our case, something you find at the market. Not only that, but they have this awesome iPhone app called Dinner Spinner, which you can use to pick recipes and cooking methods based on your available ingredients. Love this app!Dinner Spinner app

Sara Breuer, of allrecipes, was our market shopper today, and she is a fan of figs,Sara Breuer and figswhich are at the height of their season right now. We found these beautiful Mission figsMission figsand then searched allrecipes for something to make.iPhone app allrecipes.comSara picked this Fresh Fig Cake, which looks pretty easy, and very delicious. Yum!

new waste management at marketThe new waste management system at the market includes these new trash, recycling and composting collection bins, here being shown off by Jeanne Kuntz, of the Mar Vista Green Committee, City Councilman Bill Rosendahl, Joseph Treves of the Farmer’s Market board, Elise Derby of Elise’s Ramblings, her daughter and her mother.

It’s kind of exciting, even though that might seem weird to say, because the market actually generates a lot of waste — and it’s always a problem of how to deal with it all. So this is a great first step solution towards a zero-waste situation, where the market wouldn’t generate more than it could take care of. Jeanne Kuntz and the new bins

There will be a little learning curve, because both the compost and the trash bins are green, but I know we can figure it out, Mar Vista. Just read the signs carefully!
