Economic Woes Hit Me In My Roots

My roots
I posted about the economy at my other blog outlet, LA Moms Blog, about how I need to make more responsible choices with my money these days. And I have a major amount of responsibility to make up for when it comes to my hair.

I have a wonderful stylist/colorist, who’s a great guy, good at his job, and very reasonably-priced for what he does. However, it’s still too much money for me to be spending.

I used to get highlights and I really loved them, even though it cost about $165 including tip. And since I’m a woman of a certain age, my hair’s current natural color is gray, and I don’t care to have people know that, thank you very much. So you know what that means: I was spending that money every 6-8 weeks.

Well, it’s just ridiculous anymore. Last time I went in, I switched to a single color instead of highlights, saving myself about $50, but since I’m sure you can do the math, it’s still too much money. I love my hair, and I really love my stylist, and I feel badly that I may be costing him part of his living, but the reality is the reality: I can’t afford to have him do my hair.

I’m going to try the local beauty school for a cut, crossing my fingers the whole time. And to cover my gray I’m going back to the drugstore, like I used to years ago, because a box costs about $8. Sometimes there are even coupons!

It’s time for responsibility, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to go around with roots showing!

  1. I have a hair appointment this week, and I think I’m going to skip the highlights this time -you’ve inspired me. But at this point, I’m not ready to give up my stylist..we’ll have to see how things go.

  2. I really don’t want to give up mine, but I have to face reality. That’s my new mantra. I’m glad to have inspired you to try a single process color! But I want to work back up to highlights again!!! Someday…

  3. Well, ladies, I have been a stay at home mom for almost years now. I have 3 children, and before them i would go and spend ridiculous amountd of money on hair and color, as well as other treatments for myself. I did, unfortunately have to cut those things out slowly, as the children piled up. Now, i do things myself, or i just don’t do them at all. Sarah, I love your hair, and i was just looking at you the other day and saying what a great head of hair you have, and how much your sons resemble you with the same wonderful locks. Color, smullor, a box from the drugstore is good enough. You’ll look great! ;-) .

  4. Yeah,I can totally relate. I swore that with the hub’s raise this year that I was going to get my hair done on a regular basis. But every time I pay the bill I just cringe. So this last time, I did it myself again. I will get it done professionally again before we leave for Ireland since I’ll need a cut then as well. I’ve been telling myself that when I’m saving on brows and pedicures makes up for what I’ll be spending on the hair.
The good news…my stylist has offered to apply my store bought stuff for me so I’d at least save on having to regularly buy new rugs (I’m such a slob when it comes to applying my own color).

  5. I’m so jealous! Can I come to your stylist with my box, too???? Or will she kill you for mentioning it? Let me know if she’d like to corner the market on box ladies and I’ll be right over!

  6. About a year ago I starting doing mine for the same reason.
I’ll take you to the beauty supply and get you started. There’s good news.
    1. It’s really cheap $10-$20
    2. You do it on your own time
    3. Grey hair covers differently than brown so you might look like you have highlights anyhow.
I’m going to start doing my mom soon too.
